THE BLOCK
A moment I’ve been waiting to share
After keeping this under wraps for months, I can finally share that The Light Between, from my Drifting Light collection, has been revealed in Adam and Jolene’s master bedroom in House 1 on The Block, through Artist Lane.
After more than twenty years spent largely bringing other people’s creative visions to life through design, seeing one of my own artworks take its place in a room on national television feels incredibly significant. It’s the largest audience my work has reached to date and a moment I’m incredibly grateful for.
I’ve also been an avid Block watcher for years and even applied for the show myself once, so finding myself part of it in this completely unexpected way feels particularly surreal.
The Light Between
The Light Between is part of Drifting Light, a collection exploring the fleeting movement of sunlight across organic forms and the atmosphere of the Australian coastline.
Through layered photographic textures drawn from coastal environments, softened colour and shifting tonal contrasts, the collection captures moments that feel suspended somewhere between movement and stillness.
Weathered stone, driftwood, mineral surfaces, water and fragments of landscape are removed from their original context and reassembled within botanical compositions. From a distance, the forms feel familiar; closer inspection reveals unexpected textures and details within them.
That sense of discovery is an important part of the work for me. I like leaving enough of the familiar intact to draw someone closer, while allowing enough ambiguity for them to bring their own memories, associations and interpretations to what they see.
More than anything, I wanted Drifting Light to evoke the warmth and serenity of time spent near the water – the feeling of slowing down, relaxing into the sun and becoming more aware of the landscape around you.
A natural fit
There’s something particularly fitting about seeing The Light Between find its place in Mount Eliza.
For the first time in The Block’s history, these homes look out across the water, while the broader “quiet luxury” direction brings richness through natural materials, tonal layering, texture and detail rather than anything overtly showy.
That feels closely aligned with the way I approached Drifting Light. Rather than another literal depiction of the beach, I was interested in what coastal living feels like – warmth, light, ease, natural texture and that particular sense of calm that comes from time spent near the water.
I’m drawn to depth that reveals itself gradually: subtle shifts in colour, fragments of recognisable texture and details that reward a closer look. I want the work to have presence from across a room, but to offer something more when you move towards it.
Seeing those ideas reflected back through Adam and Jolene’s master bedroom makes The Light Between feel incredibly at home there.
I’m also genuinely grateful to Adam and Jolene for choosing to include my work in their home. I’ve found them both so relatable and down to earth, and I’ve caught myself nodding along with so many of Jolene’s design choices along the way. I love what they’re creating and the warmth and personality they’re bringing to the house. I may be a little biased now, but I’m very excited to watch the rest of their home take shape.
